Current Non-Conformances:
-Front left wheel hub was damaged prior to our purchase. What this means is that one of the bolt holes in the hub is stripped, and a wheel bolt cannot be installed (all other ones are fine). We've been driving it like that with no issues for 7 years. My plan was to replace the hub whenever the front brakes wear out.
-When we purchased the car, we didn't realize that the previous owner had smoked in the car. We've done the best we can to eliminate the smell. This is definitely in the category of "you should check it out for yourself" to see if you're OK with the car as it smells today.
-There is some rust in the underside of the car, as it spent its first few years of life in the northeast (New Jersey). It looks very superficial. Don’t ask me to take pictures of it, please come look at it yourself or have your mechanic look at it. Hasn’t caused any issue for us.
-Comfort access doesn't work on one of the key fobs, it works great on the other one. Both keys can open and start the car. We were quoted for a new key at the dealer, but it’s not worth it to us since the key that we use every day has the comfort access working.
-There is oil seepage which appears to be coming from the hose feeding oil to the oil cooler. Note, we have never had to add oil between oil changes, so we’re not worried about oil leaks at this time, they’re all small.
-Oil seepage between engine and transmission, likely from the main engine rear seal. It would be too expensive to see the source and fix. Was on my plans to address if the transmission ever comes out. Car doesn't require any oil between oil changes, so the leak is tiny.
-There was an accident on the rear before we purchased it. Some body panels don’t line up exactly as they should. Feel free to have it inspected by your favorite body shop. Car doesn't pull and drives great. We’ve lived with it just fine.
-One of the side window shades (driver’s side) got sucked into the door panel so it’s not available. The passenger side rear shade works.
-Check engine light on. Valvetronic error codes. I replaced the valvetronic actuator, and the cable from the ECU to the actuator, and the light remains. So, it could be an issue with the ECU or the eccentric shaft in the engine. Either one of those is about to replace. Since the car is running great, I have decided to leave it as is and offer a discount on the price of the car. I have disconnected the valvetronic entirely. This has been accounted for in the price of the car.
-Once in a while the ECU is reporting a faulty fuel vent valve. I replaced the fuel vent valve with a new BMW one and the check engine lights comes back once in a while. I also replaced the fuel tank cap. I have performed diagnostic using BMW tools and nothing is found, so I’m not sure what is triggering it. Engine runs very well so I don't worry about it.
-Transmission shifter some times doesn't go into the mode where you can manually control the shifting. The unit does report an error (dash lights do not come on as a result of this error, it’s a low priority error), but we were quoted to replace the shifter and it’s just not worth it to us since we almost never use the manual mode. Transmission shifts like butter.
-The computer is throwing an error code for the battery of the siren module. This internal siren battery powers the siren in case thieves disconnect the battery. A new siren which includes the battery is . I don’t know how much it would cost for the labor to replace it. There are videos on YouTube that show how to replace the siren module battery. I don’t have time to fix that, and we just don’t think it’s worth it.
Additional Comments:
-We've heard that the sunroof mechanism can get stuck if you put the sunroof in "vent" or tilt mode. For that reason, we don't ever use it in that mode, nor would we attempt to, it’s very expensive to fix if it gets stuck. We are selling the car as if the vent mode doesn't work. Slide mode works just fine, it’s awesome to drive with the huge sunroof open.
-Car came with run-flat tires, but it does not have run flat tires anymore. Run flat tires have a harsh ride so we went to non-run-flat tires. We have outfitted the trunk with tools to remove a tire if needed. We carry an air compressor with us in case we get a flat tire.
-Computer BSD line to the alternator has been disconnected. We were having issues with the car having an over-voltage condition even after replacing the alternator with a new one. We tried disconnecting the line and the overvoltage issue went away. Only downside of doing this is that the battery charging isn't optimized, and the alternator behaves like an "old school" alternator that puts out a constant voltage instead of changing the output voltage as the battery ages. It does not impact the daily driving at all. It does shorten the life of the battery a little, but we're happy that it runs reliably.
-Front brakes are at ~ 30 % remaining
-Rear brakes are at ~ 30 % remaining
-Front tires are at ~ 50 % remaining
-Rear tires are at ~ 60 % remaining
-Rear hatch has a quirk sometimes. If you try to close the upper panel by pressing the button, it will not do it; but if you open and close the bottom panel and press the button again, it will work. It doesn’t bother us, it doesn’t happen all the time, so we just live with it.
-I have installed an oil catch can on the engine, to help keep the engine clean and extend its life. It requires you to drain it every 2500 miles or so. It’s not hard to do, I can show you how. If you would like the oil catch can removed, I would be happy to return it to stock configuration for you, it’s very easy to do.
-I can share the oil analysis from the last few oil changes. On the very last one, there was a note about cylinder wall wear. This is because there was a misfire and the car ran with that misfire. I have since fixed the misfire and the car is running great. I suspect the next oil change analysis will come clean again but I haven’t had enough miles on the current oil to do an oil change yet.
Other Considerations:
-The car has been maintained beyond BMW's standards. Engine oil is replaced every 5K miles with Mobil 1 0W-40. Transmission fluid is drained and filled every 30K. Coolant is replaced every 3 years. Brake fluid is replaced every 2 years. Power steering, differentials, and transfer case fluids are replaced every 30K miles. Air filters are replaced every 30K miles. Spark plugs are replaced every 45K miles. All parts/fluids used are BMW original or high quality brands, no cheap low-quality or store-brand parts.
-This car has the more reliable 6-cylinder engine, compare to other X5’s that have a V8 engine. It also has a very reliable ZF 8-speed transmission. The car doesn’t have adaptive suspension or adaptive steering, which means it’s more reliable and less expensive to maintain.
-Leather conditioned about every 6 months, leather looks great.
-Paint looks very good. No clear coat issues. Headlights have no fading.
Terms of Sale:
-Our current price considers the price of a similar mileage/age BMW X5’s and the non-conformances listed above. We are open to evaluating all cash offers (sorry, cannot finance). Please don't ask what is the lowest price we're willing to sell the car for. We're not desperate to sell.
