Warranty
Since this i3 has the Ranger Extender, it comes with the CARB 15/10 year 150,000 mile warranty, which most other EVs don’t have. The 15 year covers everything mechanical, including the Range Extender and A/C unit. The 10 years only covers the battery. This is not an extended warranty. This is a warranty that’s enforced by the state of California Air Resources Board.

Range Extender
This i3 has the ‘Range Extender’ or ‘REX’, which means it has a little 2-cylinder gas engine in the back that can charge the battery while driving. It holds about 2.4 gallons of fuel, and since the car has been coded to EU specs, it can turn on at any point below 75%. Just because the tank is small and the engine is only a 2-cylinder doesn’t mean it’s weak or can’t go far. I’ve driven a few different i3’s over the years, and I’ve driven from SF to LA maybe 8 times each way, and once I was able to drive from Detroit to NYC to New Orleans to SD to SF, all on the range extender. It does make you fill up more than a normal car, but it can still go far. It gets about 40-50 mpg (40 highway, 50 city) on 91 octane gas.

Storage Space
Unlike the other 2 competing electric hatchbacks, the i3 has a front trunk, or as some call it a “frunk.” It’s not the biggest storage space; however, it can be useful for more dirty and toxic items like wiper fluid and a gas can as a backup for the range extender. Because it’s basically just a plastic bucket without any carpet, it doesn’t really matter if you spill anything in there, unlike the trunk where it could stain. Right now, I keep the tire pump, 2-gallon gas can, wiper fluid, and a towel in the frunk so that it doesn’t make a mess in the rear trunk. The glovebox is top loading and has an interior light so that you can see inside at night, it’s on the larger side and fits the manual a few times over.

Safety and Car Seats
While the i3 might be small, it’s actually one of the more safer electric hatchbacks as it has more airbags than federally mandated, very high internal passenger safety ratings, and insurance prices are on the lower side for the i3 compared to a Tesla as the average i3 driver tends not to floor it all the time and get into accidents. For seating in the i3, the car has 4 seats: 2 in the front and 2 in the rear. Both rear seats can accommodate a car seat at the same time. And because of the back doors opening from the rear, it’s actually easier to fit a car seat into the i3 compared to the average sedan.

Infotainment
This i3 has the larger 10.5-inch screen compared to some i3’s that have the smaller 6.5-inch screens. It runs iDrive 4 and has been fully updated to the newest available BMW software and maps.

Tires
This i3 has the 19in 429 wheels with EP600 all season tires.

Range
On average, this car gets 165 miles of combined range. 4.5-5 miles per kWh and 42-50 mpg on 91 octane gas. Like all electric cars, the i3 gets better range in the city compared to higher speeds on the highway however it does still get around 4.2 miles per kWh on the highway, and since it’s drive motor is electric it doesn’t idle like a normal gas engine so it’s substantially more efficient in heavy traffic.

Battery Health
Because the i3’s battery is actively cooled and heated by the car’s A/C system, used i3s tend to have batteries in better condition and health because of the cooling allowing for the battery to stay within the correct temperature range for the best battery health. The i3 also has a built-in buffer in the battery so that if you charge to 100% it won’t actually fully charge the car and it’ll protect the battery health. Along with making it so that as the battery degrades the range stays the same for longer. The A/C and heather systems are also covered under the 15 year CARB warranty so there’s no worries about it breaking and leaving you with a large bill. The battery is covered for 10 years too.

Coding
This car has been coded with the hold state of charge menu for the range extender. This allows the car to turn on the range extender any point below 75% instead of the normal 8%. Thus allowing you to run the car more like a normal hybrid instead of a full EV. I can code it to any other specifications you’d like.
